In Mark 10:17–31, the rich young ruler was considered a successful man by the standards of his days, and by whatever definition and parameter anyone may want to use.
Here was a man who had great riches, but knelt before Jesus, and asked Him what he must do to inherit eternal life. When the Lord answered him that he should obey all the commandments, he replied that he had been keeping them all from his youth. Jesus further told him the one thing that was lacking in his life. He therefore asked him to go and sell whatever he had, give to the poor, and then come back to take up the cross and follow Him. However, he was sad at Jesus’ word and went away sorrowful because he had great possessions. By the standards of men, he was a successful man. But by God’s standard, he was a failure. Therefore, you must understand that God is not asking you to give because He wants to impoverish you. Rather, He asks you to give because He wants to enrich your life. He wants to make you successful.
